This advertisement is of an armchair designed by ligne roset. It is a well designed ad. The strategic use of minimal color used in the background allows for those viewing the ad not to be distracted from the main focus of the ad which is the chair. The red chair serves as a complete contrast to the dark colors surrounding it. It is as though the advertisers is wanting you to liven up your dark room with this vibrant colored chair. You can live beautifully and comfortably not by things flashy as diamonds but by having this chair it will give you that feeling. It is like they are saying you can have the diamonds and a significant other but there is something else missing and having a Facett armchair will bring it all together.

MY INTENT was to create a space that reflects the outside in, abstracting forms of the exterior into the interior in a subtle way. At the beginning of the project I was focusing so much on changing the building exterior without noticing that there are some strong elements on the existing building that was worth exploring. On the second building with the smaller building there is a band of windows that I liked as well as the curving of the vault. I believed that these two elements were most important and worth keeping. My intent was achieved through the use of curved partition walls as well as the strategic flow of movement throughout the space. Griding played a major part, which was used when figuring out where the entrance into the space as well as where the curved partition walls would go. The experience of the space is both inviting and welcoming which are characteristics that create a home atmosphere. Color played a big role in my intent. Choosing both warm and cool colors that are similiar to nature. By doing this it eliminates the worry of offending people of different cultures and ethnicities that will be in the space. These colors liven up the space subtly.
The flooring within the space is orange toned wood and carpet. The carpet would be in the storage rooms. To keep things open and connected with the outdoors glass is a dominant material used. The vaults would be glass allowing natural light to filter through. As well as Glass bands ribboning the offices so that the people that work there would not feel trapped in a box.

During this charette I tried thinking of how i would like the building to look. I began with preliminary sketches of things that would inspire me. It proved to be a bit challenging for me to complete all the contents of the charette in the small amount of time that was given. The only way I could think of at first was in terms of things being abstract.

My country for this project was Korea. I first started this assignment by thinking of what first comes to mind when i think of Korea. I think of their bright vibrant colors, their food and their tradition.
I researched Korea's culture, and the biggest thing that i saw was the Lotus Lantern Festival. It is a big celebration in Korea. It is a celebration of Siddhartha Guatama's birthday. The dominant religion in both North and South Korea is Buddhism so in researching the festival i decided to focus my welcome mat around their religion. The Lotus flower is an important symbol in Buddhism. It is said that when Siddhartha looked in the reflection of the water and saw a lotus in the pond it was then he was enlightened and gain vision of creating the religion Buddhism.

Computing in Architectural Design has been made to make designing not only easier but also made to take less time to complete than before i.e. the phrase coined “time is money”. The more time it takes to design money the less money is made. The faster something is made the more money is received. Creating things by hand to me has more creativity then the click of a mouse. While computing of design does make things easier where as it does save paper, it is easier to go back and make changes because it is saved.
Some things are hard to portray by hand but with computer programs the possibilities are endless. We have a choice of whether we would like to use pencil and paper or computer programs. In early time periods they did not have such an opportunity. Computing helps to communicate ideas in a clear and concise matter whereas pencil and paper may not always prove to be easily understood. As talked about in the article computing can only go as far as we take it. These programs can simply do what we tell it to do, it can’t tell us what to do. Technology has not evolved to the point in which it can do the thinking for us.
In the future I see computing getting advanced to the point that we as designers will not have to do half as many things we do in the design process. That simply one click of the mouse will do it all. The time in which it takes now to create something with the computer programs we currently have in the future it will take less than half the time. I think a major improvement to computers would be being able to sketch in a better way.

Close To Home Analysis

The structure looks as though it belongs outside in nature. When one first looks at it that is one of the first thoughts that come to mind. The colors enhance this thought.

There are a variety of shades of wood used from a natural shade to orange -toned brown pieces of wood. This contrast in color and use of stains adds texture to the structure as a whole.

When passing through the art gallery it is as if the structure is jumping out at you, which invites viewers inside to soothe their curiosity with the knowledge the exhibit provides.

Connections From Within
The concept of the Close to Home: Edward Loewenstein exhibit in the Maud F. Gatewood Studio Arts building is connections. This concept fits for this exhibit because it is very similar to Lowenstein’s work he has done in Greensboro. This exhibit is a clear representation of the concept that Edward Lowenstein focused on in his contributions to Greensboro architecture. His structures had a strong connection to nature and its surroundings. The Close to Home exhibit brings the outside in tying together nature and civilization all encompassed into one.
This is achieved through distinct usage of materials as well as colors. Simplicity of materials ties into the concept as well. The structure is primarily built to expose the wood beams and in a maze like format that puts visitors in a directed path. There is a clear fluidity in the lines that are created by the materials used. Metal is used creating a distinct contrast of horizontal lines between the wood pieces.
The variation of lighting also adds to the experience of the structure. There is natural light coming from the outside of the Gatewood building that filters through the glass of the art gallery. Within the gallery itself there are spotlights that hang above highlighted areas of displayed information. The lighting creates an interesting band of shadows onto the floor. It aids in making the visitor feeling a close relationship to the structure. The minimal lighting causes the visitor to really observe what is going on in the space, it adds to the mystery. The images, texts, and graphics are what bring the concept together. The images show communities being brought together, showing the process work as well as final product of some of Loewenstein’s work. There are narratives placed to walk the visitor through the buildings created. The text size, and font is very subtle so that it is not overpowering in the visitor’s experience. It flows with the pictures in the exhibit. The use of a different media gave the visitor a broader scope into Edward Loewenstein and his work. It enhances the exhibit as well as serves as a contrast to the continual flow of photos and text throughout the space. The enclosed space that contains the projected images is very successful. The images are projected onto corrugated plastic, which changes the image’s picture. Also those who are looking from outside the gallery space are curious as to what the blurred image is that appears on the plastic. This allows for visitors to go through open spaces and then end up in a somewhat enclosed space that has minimal lighting it, that also has images being shown. The contrast of white and back photos as well as color photos connects the past to today.
A monumental moment of the exhibit is the strong connection of the outside and inside. This is successfully achieved by the small break in the structure when a wall protrudes out of the glass wall into the lobby space. This break causes all those who passes by to stop and look at that one particular area and draws them into the exhibit.
When encountering this space I found myself drawn to the right side entrance and move through the space as if in an maze from right to left. The exhibit is an interactive mechanism that draws people into it because of its uniqueness. If one had never experienced the qualities of a modern home, after going through the space one would know. There is a distinct and clear connection of environment to architecture.
